How much mulch or soil do you need?

Here's a quick rule of thumb that may help:
1 cubic yard (either mulch or soil) will cover an area 10 feet X 10 feet (100sq ft) at 3 inches deep.

How does a cubic yard of mulch compare with bagged mulch?

3 cubic foot bag of mulch purchased from a store will only cover 12 square feet at 3 inches deep.
2 cubic foot bag of mulch will cover 8 square feet at 3 inches deep.
